The Wise Traveler: How to Spend Less when Traveling

Many people avoid vacations and traveling distances because of the cost, but there are ways that you can save money on traveling. Plus, sometimes you have no choice when it comes to a need to travel, maybe because of work or even a death in the family. There are plenty of different ways to travel, whatever the reason you need to, and different ways to save for each type of travel.

If You Are Driving

If you are taking your own vehicle, or even an RV, you don’t have a ton of savings options, aside from making sure you are going the speed limit. Not only does this help on gas mileage, but it might keep your from getting a costly speeding ticket.

Make sure that you check the air in your tires before you head out. The right amount of air can help with gas mileage, and help keep you from getting a flat. Check oil and other fluids as well, to help prevent a costly breakdown while you are on the road.

It costs money for the gas in your vehicle, which is probably the most expensive part of traveling by road. If you travel during certain holidays, like spring break or Christmas, you’ll usually find the cost higher than other times. Use this to determine travel times and how much you’ll need in the tank.

If You Are Taking The Bus Or Train

You don’t have to opt for driving yourself or flying as the only options for travel, as there are buses and trains in most areas of the U.S. You can find ticket deals, for both buses and trains, you just need to take some time to look for them.

These days with the internet and smartphones it’s easier to find coupon codes, online deals, and even compare prices, depending on where you are departing and where you are traveling to. Sometimes you might find it cheaper to depart in a terminal a little farther away, and the gas money to get to it will still make it more affordable. Take time to research.

If You Are Flying

The same goes for flying, as it does for bus and train. You can find some great deals if you take some time to research tickets online. You may find special deals for flying into or out of certain places. Don’t be afraid to do some searching for the best flights.

A far as saving money on air travel, you also want to keep an eye on your luggage. Most airports charge even for your carry on these days. If you have a ton of stuff to take with you it might be cheaper to ship some stuff so you just have one or two pieces of luggage. Check with your airline ahead of time, and find the best luggage deals as well as flight deals.
