A person who is under the constant influence of his negative thoughts can not become happy and achieve his psychological well-being, and, therefore, his life will turn into a continuous painful existence.
The Concepts of “Negative Thoughts” and Their Interpretation in Psychology
Psychologists interpret the concept of negativity as something bad, negative, heavy emotional and sensory state arising from nervous and mental tension. This feeling in the human soul can be caused by any external or internal factors in the course of an individual’s life.
If we turn to therapists’ interpretation of the term negative thoughts, we can learn that they are desires that arise in a person’s mind and carry a negative, often destructive, vector charge.
The presence of negatively charged thoughts leads a person to a state of destructive fear or stress, which can flow into the psychological syndrome of depression if one does not treat his spiritual health properly.
The Occurrence of Negative Thoughts
Where do negative thoughts come from and what is the harm? This question is asked by many scientists, studying it in detail.
It should be noted that such a situation is a consequence of a negative situation that arose in the ordinary life of a person. Moreover, this individual is the most ordinary person, seen neither in violation of the law, nor in any actions harmful to other people.
The danger of negative ideas lies in the fact that, being in non-motivation, the individual falls into a state that is close to a depressive one. As a consequence of such a reaction, a person may have a desire to give up on any activity. This leads to withdrawal, rejection of society, and complete denial of everything he encounters.
An offer to consult a therapist will serve as a recommendation to the environment, which has encountered this type of problem with a loved one. However, this doesn’t mean there is a psychological syndrome. But untimely referral to a specialist who can help correct a negative situation will certainly lead to the emergence of a severe psychological disorder.
How Intrusive, Negative Thoughts Occur
The presence of negative thoughts in a person can be noticed based on the following scheme, which examines the process of their occurrence step by step:
- The first feeling of the presence of negativity. The person begins to experience a state of “suffocation” and “desolation”. He is overwhelmed with heavy thoughts which he experiences from within, without realizing their causes and not being able to cope with them independently due to the lack of auxiliary, internal energy resources.
- Attempting to restore the individual’s internal energy resource. After encountering a feeling of emptiness, the individual tries to find the strength to restore his inner energy resource to the full extent, partially switching from his usual everyday routine activity to any other activity that allows him to get a charge of psychological well-being. Often, these independent attempts fail because of the lack of physical and nervous strength. This leads to emotional exhaustion. That is why it is always necessary to have a colleague or a friend who will support you in such a rather difficult moment in life.
- Emotional exhaustion of the individual. This is a condition in which the individual, even while awake, thinks he is napping. Emotional exhaustion manifests itself in an unwillingness to take interest in the events going on around him. Sometimes people experiencing negative thoughts are characterized by such a condition as a “bursting of the nerves.” And this turns out to be very close to reality because there is nervous overstrain, which is expressed in a sense of emptiness, lack of physical and emotional strength. Emotions become muted or dulled.
- Use of the last resource. At this stage, the person, not yet aware of what is going on, survives on the residual mental, physical, and energetic reserve resource of his body, the exhaustion of which leads to denial of the problem at hand or complete disregard of it.
- Culmination of the condition. This is an intermediate stage between the use of the last resource and cynicism toward oneself. Being in a state of negativity due to negative thoughts, the person experiences inner dissatisfaction with himself/herself. He begins to strive for complete isolation, isolating himself from his usual surroundings. This is caused by a misunderstanding of his state of emotional emptiness and fears of a different nature. Among the possible symptoms indicative of such a situation is a lack of appetite, a desire for some unfamiliar activity. In other words, it’s a person’s reaction, close to depression, which leads to a disdainful attitude toward oneself.
- Cynicism in relation to oneself or depersonalization. In this phase of the experience, the person is pessimistic about his or her future. He or she despairs of changing anything for the better, as it seems to him or her, is at the limit of his or her abilities in life. He rarely listens to the people around him, practically ceasing to notice them. He/she reduces almost all of his/her contacts to zero, or they begin to acquire an officious character. The individual’s work activity is marked by a decrease in initiative. He or she becomes indifferent to everything, including work and vital-personal activities. Cynicism in relation to oneself is characterized by an inhuman attitude toward others.
Ways to Get Rid of Negative Thoughts
Faced with the problems of emotional discomfort due to the constant negative impact coming from anxious and negatively directed thoughts, a person tries to switch himself to a positive attitude. Otherwise, he develops a personality deformation that leads him to depersonalization.
