One of the most important things you should do in your college life is to always look ahead. Look at what classes you are going to take. Look at what you need to do to get a good job.
A study was done on hundreds of successful people, and there was one quality that all of them had…That quality is called time perspective.
Every one of them could look at where they were and where they wanted to be. You would be wise to start doing the same. This is so important in college because you are making so many important decisions about your life and future career.
Picking Your Major
The first thing that you should be thinking about is your major. You probably already know how important choosing the right major is. But you probably haven’t thoroughly researched all of the options that you have.
Please take the time to find the one major that truly excites you the most. I’m telling you this because I don’t want you to make the same mistakes that I did.
The first two years of college, I always switched from one major to another. Simply because I didn’t take the time, in the beginning, to find that one major that I knew I was going to fall in love with.
When you choose your major, you should be so passionate about the subject that you would be willing to learn it just for fun.
Colleges have a ton of majors to choose from. I assure you there is one that you will find fascinating. The worst thing you can do is pick a major you’re not passionate about. When you don’t like your major, two things will happen:
- Your grades will reflect it. When you don’t enjoy the subject, you won’t take the time to learn everything. This will keep building and building until eventually; you will be so burnout that you will want to quit.
- Your career will suffer. If you get a job that is related to your field of study, you probably won’t enjoy it anymore then you did learn it. I don’t care how much it pays; you won’t be happy if you have a job that you don’t enjoy going to every day.
This is so important. Pick a field where you want to become an expert. This is the only way you will be truly successful and happy.
Plan For Your Career
Another great thing to plan for is your career. It’s amazing how many college students don’t do this. They graduate from college and think something magical happens.
But in reality, nothing will happen unless you have done something about it to make it happen.
Many majors have a co-op or internship program. This is a great thing to do for several reasons:
- It may help you decide that this major isn’t right for you. It’s better to find out early in college if you don’t enjoy what you are doing. As opposed to getting a degree and realizing it much later.
- It gives you a great chance to get a job. Many students who work for a company during college end up working for them when they get out of college. You certainly have a major advantage over those who haven’t worked for them before.
- It gives you a chance to show off your skills. People like seeing that you have experience. It means that you have proved yourself capable of doing whatever it is you do. And when you have done that, it’s very easy for you to get hired.
It’s so important to plan for your career. After all, that’s why you came to college, isn’t it?
Always be thinking about what you want to do as a career and don’t stop until you have found the perfect one.
Look Into The Future
The next thing is different from the first two. And that is to think about all of your bad habits.
Think about what you are doing now, and what would happen if you continued to do that habit for a long period. I’ll give an example…
Let’s say you finally graduate college, but you don’t have a penny to your name. Sure you made around $3000 each summer you were in college. But you like buying stuff. Who doesn’t? And now you’re graduating college without a penny to your name.
Well, who sold you on that plan four years ago?
You spent everything that you earned, and now you have no money saved up for when you graduate. Wouldn’t it have been nice to have had a couple of thousand dollars saved up to help get you started after you graduated?
Of course, it would have!
These are the type of things that you need to start thinking about. This right here is the most important question you could ever ask yourself. And that is. “If I continue doing what I am doing, what will my life be like five years from now?”
If you can answer this question and think positively, you are well on your way to a bright future. The fact is that people highly overestimate what they can do in a year. But highly underestimate what they can do in five years.
Find a skill that you know you are going to need when you get out of college. Spend one hour each day doing whatever it takes to become an expert at that skill.
Let’s see, that’s one hour for four years. That will be 60 days and 20 hours working on that skill. Something is telling me you will be pretty good at it by the time you graduate!
Find things that you can do that will make you a better person in the long run. Taking a jog will only do so much for you if you do it one time. But doing it over the course of several months and years will have a fantastic impact on your health.
The same applies to reading books. But spend one hour each day reading. Then over the course of a few years, you will have read a ton of books! And that could have a significant impact on your life. And one more way to self-improvement is to develop your writing skills. So, don’t skip essays assignments and check them easily on https://phdessay.com/online-plagiarism-checker/.
Find some quality things that you can spend a little bit of time on each day. That over the long run, will do wonders for you.
Also, look at all the bad habits that you get yourself into. You may not think about them much because you do them so often that it just seems normal.
Try to find these habits and eliminate them. They might not seem like a big deal right now, but over a long period they may start to have a huge impact.
By always thinking about things with a long time perspective, you will have a huge advantage over everyone else. And you will be well on your way to a happy and successful life.
